She then becomes deactivated, awaiting her future orders. The symbol of Palgaea will appear when she stabs her Axe on the ground, but the color is violet instead of yellow.Īshlotte manages to kill Astaroth and drags his body back to the priests that created her as proof. She then drags them around the arena before sending them sailing into the air. She was not distracted by the destruction she simply set off across the desert to complete her appointed task.Īshlotte was originally tasked with retrieving Astaroth, but since she didn't get there in time before Maxi took care of him, she just settled for his core.Įternal Damnation: Just like Astaroth, Ashlotte sends her opponent crashing to the ground before she catches them on the end of her cult. Given the name Ashlotte Maedel, she emerged beneath the sunlight, sending tremors through the hall-collapsed underground shrine, making it crumble into ruin. However, although she could talk and act like a normal human, she had no emotions and was set on her goal of eradicating Astaroth. Together in an intricate and arcane configuration, what the world would call a "machine", made this executioner doll tick, while features of unparalleled grace masked the mechanical components within. An artistic mass of gears and shafts locked Since attempts to control the golem, who was created based on a human, all ended in failure, they decided to make a soldier that has no soul.Įventually, she, or "it" as it isn't a living thing, was completed. Eventually, two priests who survived the struggles came up with a plan of taking down Astaroth. Her design appears to have a steam punk vibe to it, with the old world fashion combined with the mechanical.įygul Cestemus had been pushed to the brink of annihilation by Astaroth, with the cult's survivors doing their best to preserve their lives. Beneath this is a white ruffled skirt and torn black tights with black strapped shoes. Her 'dress' appears to be made from several metal sheets covered by a crinoline. She wears a bonnet-like hat with a red bow and wire halo that boarders her face. Her internal cogs and wheels are visible through this. As a living 'Machine', Ashlotte's design focuses on her inhuman appearance with a heart like window in her chest.

Inkscape CAN handle such a project, especially if you use layers. Well it's hard to describe, but I think it would be a really lot of work to break up the automatically traced image into it's components as shown on the original. If you had a straight line in your raster image, Trace Bitmap probably produced, not an open path with 2 nodes, but a closed path pending on the quality of the original, maybe up to 10 or 20 nodes. Trace Bitmap does something similar to that. If there's a little bit of a curve, you might have 8 nodes. But after stroke to path, you now have a very long, very skinny rectangle of 4 nodes. Have you ever used Stroke to Path? You could have a path with 2 nodes, just a straight line. I'll preview what you'll see, once you get started, if you decide to do that. But you're right, it will take some time and a lot of work! Oh ok, that's what you just said in your message, lol. If this is the case, it will take some time to break up the large object, and there will be a lot of node editing. And in reality, if you zoom into a sharp corner, you'll see that it is indeed rounded.Īnd now that I know it's a street map, and that you want to include buildings, and other things, I think you may quickly realize that your map might be one large object (of what you said comprises over 10,000 nodes!). And also, you'll start to see corners which appeared to be sharp, are becoming rounded. But what I think you will find is that the more you click it, the fewer nodes are removed each time. There IS a way to reduce the number of nodes - Path menu > Simplify. I am now thinking unless I can find a way of automatically reducing the number of nodes while preserving rendition quality, maybe the 'Carbon trace' method suggested before is more efficient ? As this is 2-black&white line-drawing, any suggestions for alternate settings in the Trace Bitmap dialog ? However, when I used Irfanview to reduce the default 16k colours in the 'black&white' greyscale source to 2 colours, sharp then blur, remove dithering Inkscape then produced 12.391 nodes - bigger than before, so that did nt help.Īnother thought: I used the Default Single scan parameters, and default option values. It also occured to me now, maybe I should have tried preprocessing the source JPG to present an easier task for Trace Bitmap to use. I am also thinking even if this also results in a perfect rendition, the possible 10,312 objects produced, may be too big a job to edit to reduce the 10,000 objects down the few hundred buildings shown on the Street Plan ? I was thinking the next step is a further conversion, from a single 10,312 node object down to a few hundred separate objects. convert text to the more efficient SVG Text object type, convert some buildings to simple rectangle objects, perhaps add fill colours to some buildings. However, as a step 2, I want to be able to edit the logical objects (5 streets containing a few hundred buildings) in the SVG version, eg. The SVG version is also black lines on white background and visually is near perfect reproduction of the 170KB JPG source. Over the weekend made progress using your suggested 'Trace bitmap' using the defaults (Single scan) which successfully converted my simple streetplan to a SVG that was a big 1.2MB file containing 1 object of 10312 nodes. My facilities are limited to source streetplan on paper and a digital camera I used to get a digital copy. I see since my logon last Friday some further input. Sorry, I am a long way from internet access, so prepared this reply at base and took it to a cybercafe for upload. Or Mediterranian.? (My brain seems to be much older than the rest of me, lol ) But if you search with "map" you should find it quickly.or.rats, I can't remember.I think it might have been a map of Tanzania, if the "map" search returns too many results. And there's another very recent one, but I can't remember the title. One recent topic is entitled "Carbon Paper". Usually folks who do this (again including me) prefer to reduce the opacity of the layer with the original, and so it's just like tracing the map on tracing paper (except the Inkscape pen takes some practice.however for me, much less than with Trace bitmap).Īnd as druban suggested, you can find more detailed tips by searching the forum. You would open Inkscape, import the map, add a new layer, and draw on the new layer, directly over the map. So if time is a factor, you might want to go with the other approachĪnd the other way is to trace it by hand. There is quite a learning curve, it seems, for most users, including me. One would be to use Path menu > Trace bitmap. In general, there are a couple of ways to approach it. What Is the Difference Between Quadratic Regression and Multiple Linear Regression But the general public often calls this quadratic regression because we are fitting a quadratic function to the input data points. Because finding a quadratic fit means solving a set of linear equations. Statisticians sometimes call quadratic regression linear regression. The value for y is actually a linear equation because we never multiply different values of a and x. In the quadratic regression equation, we never multiply the values of a_i together. We can get really fancy and use some math symbols to rewrite the quadratic regression equation as The general form of the quadratic regression equation looks like the following. General Form of the Quadratic Regression Equation a, b and c are regression coefficients that the quadratic regression calculator found. Where y is the predicted response variable and x is the measured predictor variable. The equation below shows the second-order quadratic regression formula The order parameter was 2, so the quadratic equation fits a second order model. Notice how the biggest power of x is 2 in the x^2 term. The quadratic regression calculator found a fit of y = 0.81x^2 - 53.06x + 941.2. Not only was she inordinately fond of the dash, she wrought impressive variations on it. The Nobel Laureate of this form of punctuation in poetry was Emily Dickinson. Quality, and in poetry, and is subject to no rules at all. This function shows up in dialogue (“I saw Bill yesterday - wait, is that a helicopter up there? - never mind”), in prose with a stream-of-consciousness Of equality-that everyone should be treated the same-an ethic of care rests on the premise of nonviolence-that no one should be hurt.”) In addition, make sure dashes are placed in suchĪ way that, if the material within them is removed, the sentence still makes sense.Ī third purpose of dashes is to indicate disjointedness. Than that produces confusion about exactly what is meant to be set off by the dashes, as in this sentence from a well-known piece of social criticism: “While an ethic of justice proceeds from the premise When using dashes this way, limit yourself to one pair per sentence. The second main category is the Parenthetical Dash, in which dashes are deployed in pairs and set off nonessential elements of the sentence. Read in an interesting way, and I would like to emphasize it.” When using dashes this way, you are allowed only one per sentence. That - unlike commas, periods, semicolons and all the others - doesn’t seem to be subject to any rules. That’s right - I’m talking about the horizontal line formed by typing two hyphens in a row. Let’s consider the most versatile piece of punctuation - the dash. Draft is a series about the art and craft of writing. Often people may sell or donate their car without signing any contract. (Not that either of them thinks of it this way they are both confused, scared, and experimenting, and the actors are totally convincing as they convey the characters’ inchoate desires, fears, and fumbling confusions). As their relationship develops, they continually both arouse each other and hold each other back it’s like trying to see how close to the edge they can get without actually having sex. Anyway, Dawn feels a mutual attraction with a boy who is also an enthusiastic abstinence-pledger. (If anything, the Christians, although creepy, don’t come off in the film as badly as the heavy-metal stepbrother does). To the movie’s credit, it doesn’t take any cheap shots at this it rather views it as a symptom, both of Dawn’s confusion at her own surging hormones, and at our society’s overall difficulties with sexual expression. Initially, Dawn is an enthusiastic member, and indeed organizer, of the teenage “abstinence” movement she addresses pep rallies in which (mostly white) clean-cut teems take vows of chastity until marriage. Not to mention that the family house is virtually next door to a power plant continually spewing noxious fumes. In addition, at home she has to deal with the fact that her mother is dying, as well as with her obnoxious stepbrother, who apparently has the hots for her, and who is always playing loud heavy metal music while he abuses his girlfriend and trains his killer Rottweiler. She is unable to manage the rush of feelings and desires that seem to take possession of her. Teeth centers on the figure of Dawn (brilliantly played by Jess Weixler, who is actually in her 20s but manages to convey the look and feel of a teenager, and the affective confusions and ambivalences that people of such an age are prone to), a young high-school-age woman made anxious by her burgeoning sexuality. (Mitchell Lichtenstein is the son of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, and he contrasts to Cronenberg much in the way that his father contrasts to, say, Jackson Pollock). Conceptually, Teeth is body horror on a level with early Cronenberg (think especially of The Brood), but affectively it eschews Cronenberg’s extremity and anguish in favor of something much gentler and lighter (and I do not mean these words as veiled criticisms). But Teeth is rather different, both because the vagina dentata is literalized as the point of the “horror,” and because of the way the film focuses on the ambivalent feelings of the female protagonist who does not realize what she has within her. (Carol Clover wrote the book on those movies). Sure, there are lots of misogynistic movies where women are (metaphorically, and sometimes literally) castrating bitches from hell, or where alien monsters are devouring vaginas and in the 1980s in particular there was the rape/revenge subgenre (most notable example: I Spit On Your Grave) in which a sometimes literal castration was the punishment meted out to the scumbag rapists. Indeed, a horror-comedy about the vagina dentata is such a rich and clever idea that it’s surprising nobody has ever done it before. Although it was made in 2007, and is set in the present, Teeth has a real 1980s-horror feel to it - which is a good thing, since the 80s were the great decade for horror films with smart socio-politico-sexual subtexts. It might be more accurate to say that it’s gruesome, campy, and affecting in more or less equal measure - though the affectingness ultimately wins out, I think. Mitchell Lichtenstein’s Teeth is actually a delightful movie - to the extent that a horror film about the vagina dentata and castration can be delightful. Thomson's discovery of the electron.Īctually, what Thomson discovered was that cathode rays were streams of negatively charged particles with a mass about 1,000 times smaller than a hydrogen atom. Modern theories about the physical structure of atoms did not begin until 1897, with J. Subatomic Structureĭalton's work was mainly about the chemistry of atoms-how they combined to form new compounds-rather than the physical, internal structure of atoms, although he never denied the possibility of atoms' having a substructure. Dalton was also the first to propose standard symbols for the elements. In an essay published in 1805, Dalton had included a list of atomic weights for 21 elements. Dalton's particular contribution, which distinguished his work from what had been done before, was his method for actually determining atomic weight. Not all of these ideas were new the Greeks had already introduced the idea that elements were composed of atoms and that atoms of different elements had different physical properties. Dalton's theory of atoms rested on four basic ideas: chemical elements were composed of atoms the atoms of an element were identical in weight the atoms of different elements had different weights and atoms combined only in small whole-number ratios, such as 1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 2:3, to form compounds. Modern atomic theory is generally said to begin with John Dalton, an English chemist and meteorologist who in 1808 published a book on the atmosphere and the behavior of gases that was entitled A New System of Chemical Philosophy. However, the Greeks' conception of the atom survived, both in Aristotle's works (his arguments against) and in another classical work by the Roman author Lucretius, De rerum natura (“On the Nature of Things”), which was rediscovered in Europe at the start of the Renaissance. During the Middle Ages in Europe, Roman Catholic theologians were heavily influenced by Aristotle's ideas, and so atomic philosophy was largely dismissed for centuries. While the idea of the atom was supported by some later Greek philosophers, it was fiercely attacked by others, including Aristotle, who argued against the existence of such particles. Color, taste, and other intangible qualities were also thought to be composed of atoms. (The word atom comes from the Greek word atomos, which means “indivisible.”) These thinkers held that, in addition to being too small to be seen, unchangeable, and indestructible, atoms were also completely solid, with no internal structure, and came in an infinite variety of shapes and sizes, which accounted for the different kinds of matter. The idea that all matter is made up of tiny, indivisible particles, or atoms, is believed to have originated with the Greek philosopher Leucippus of Miletus and his student Democritus of Abdera in the 5th century B.C. It wasn't until the very end of the 19th century that technology became advanced enough to allow scientists a glimpse of the atom's constituent parts: the electron, nucleus, proton, and neutron. However, prior to the scientific revolution and the development of the scientific method starting in the 16th century, ideas about the atom were mainly speculative. A theory of the structure and behavior of atoms has taken more than two millenia to evolve, from the abstract musings of ancient Greek philosophers to the high-tech experiments of modern scientists.
